Moving season is sixty days wide, and most movers start marketing inside it

The busy months are not a surprise. Everyone in the industry knows when they are, and almost everyone starts spending once they have already arrived, which is the one time of year the work is most expensive to buy and least useful to have started. The fix is a calendar, not a budget.

01

Why does starting in season not work?

Because the things that move a local business take longer than the season lasts.

A profile that gets filled out in June helps in July. A page written in June is competing against pages that have been indexed and collecting signals for a year. Reviews arriving in June are a burst rather than a pattern, and burst is the shape that reads as manufactured.

Meanwhile the paid market is at its most expensive precisely when everyone else has reached the same conclusion at the same time, so a budget that starts in season buys the least it will buy all year.

The work that pays in July is done in February. That is not a clever insight, it is the ordinary consequence of how long anything takes to establish, and the reason a mover's marketing calendar should look nothing like a mover's revenue calendar.

02

What actually has to be ready before the season?

Four things, and none of them are expensive.

The profile, complete. Categories, service areas as named cities, hours including holidays, and the services list filled with what people actually search: local moving, long distance, packing, storage, piano, apartment, office. Most mover profiles carry a category and nothing else, which is the largest unforced error in the category. The field-by-field version is in adding services and products to your profile correctly.

Hours that are true. A company that shows as open when nobody answers converts a lead into a bad review, and the ranking and trust cost of getting the field wrong is in business hours and holiday hours.

A review habit that predates the season. Reviews arriving steadily from March read differently from thirty arriving in July. More on that in reviews when the customer is handing over everything they own.

Pages for the moves you want, rather than one page called Services. A mover who wants long distance work and has no long distance page is invisible to the search that matters most to their margin.

03

How does a mover with no storefront rank at all?

By declaring a service area properly and by being specific about where the trucks actually go.

Most movers are service area businesses. They have a yard rather than a shopfront, customers do not visit, and the ranking mechanics are different enough to be worth understanding before spending anything. That is worked through in how service area businesses rank without a storefront.

The common failure is a page listing forty cities. It looks like coverage and reads like nothing, and a page that says the same thing about Alameda and Antioch is a page about neither. It also creates a maintenance problem nobody plans for, because forty pages of near-identical copy have to be kept accurate by somebody, and they never are. Pick the places the trucks genuinely go, write about the move rather than the city, and let the rest be handled by the service area setting rather than by a page.

04

What does California require of the advertising itself?

A permit, and the statute names advertising inside the prohibited conduct.

This is the part most people in the industry know loosely and few state precisely. Business and Professions Code section 19237(a) says a household mover "shall not engage, or attempt to engage, in the business of the transportation of used household goods and personal effects by motor vehicle over any public highway in this state, including by any means or media, advertising, soliciting, offering, arranging as a broker, or entering into an agreement regarding the transportation of used household goods and personal effects," unless the authority conditions are met.

Read what is inside that list. Advertising and soliciting are named as part of the conduct requiring authority, so an operator without a permit is not merely unlicensed while running ads. The advertising is itself inside the prohibition. Intrastate work runs on a state permit and interstate work on federal operating authority.

Then the clause that belongs on your website. Section 19237(e): "The bureau shall identify household movers that are authorized to conduct intrastate and interstate moves in the state on its internet website."

A customer can check you before the truck arrives, and almost no mover's site tells them so. In a category where the entire purchase is trust, pointing a customer at a verification you already pass is the cheapest credibility available. Publish your permit number, say what it is, and say where it can be checked.

This is information, not legal advice, and anything about your own authority is a question for your counsel and the bureau rather than your marketing.

05

What does the calendar actually look like?

Backwards from the season, and the first two blocks are the ones people skip.

Five to six months out. Profile completed and corrected. Service area set properly. Pages written for the move types you want more of. Review process agreed and started, with somebody named as the owner of it.

Three to four months out. The pages have been indexed long enough to be read. Fix what the search terms report says is missing rather than what you guessed in month one.

Six to eight weeks out. Paid spend starts if it is going to, against pages that already exist. Photography refreshed. Holiday hours set.

In season. Do the work, ask every customer for a review, and change nothing else. Mid-season is the worst possible time to redesign anything, and the urge to do it arrives every year.

And immediately after. This is the block everyone misses, and it is the cheapest month of the year to think in. The month after the season is when the year's data is freshest and the schedule is open, which makes it the only sensible time to look at what actually happened. What a year-over-year comparison can and cannot tell you at this scale is in how seasonality distorts month-over-month comparisons.

06

What does the quote page have to do?

Give a number or give the reason there is not one, and do neither vaguely.

Movers are asked for a price before anything else, and the industry answer is a form. A form is fine as one path and it is a poor primary path, because the person asking has three tabs open and will fill in the one that answers fastest.

Three things make a quote page work. A range with what moves it, because a customer who cannot guess frequently does not enquire at all. The variables named: distance, volume, stairs, elevator reservations, parking permits, packing, storage. And what happens next, in hours rather than in "shortly," because the response time is the first evidence of how the move will be handled.

What not to do is publish a per-hour rate with no context and let the customer discover the truck fee, the travel time and the materials on the invoice. That is the review you will be reading in August.

And answer the insurance question on the page. Valuation coverage is the single most misunderstood thing in a residential move, the default is not what customers assume, and a mover who explains it plainly before the estimate looks like the adult in the category.

07

Which searches are worth having and which are not?

The specific ones, and the emergency ones.

A mover ranking for "movers near me" is competing with everyone including three national brokers with a budget. A mover ranking for "piano movers", "apartment movers with stairs", "long distance movers to Seattle", "last minute movers" is competing with the two or three companies that actually do that work.

The emergency searches are their own market. Somebody who has lost a closing date or been evicted is not comparing quotes, and the company that answers is the company that wins. That mirrors what happens in other trades, and the shape of it is in the 11pm search for home care, where the same urgency logic applies to a different category.

The block all of these resolve into is the local pack, and how it is assembled is in the local pack explained for people who do not work in SEO.

08

What should the profile look like during the season?

Alive, and it is the only month of the year the effort is cheap to justify.

Photographs of this year's trucks and this year's crew, dated by the fact that they are obviously recent. Posts that say what you can still take: a Saturday in late July, a two-bedroom slot next week. Answers to questions in the profile's own question section, written by you before somebody else answers them wrongly.

None of that is a ranking trick. It is the difference between a profile that reads as a working company and one that reads as a company that existed in 2021. A customer comparing three movers on a phone screen is reading recency as competence, and they are not entirely wrong to.

One thing not to do in season: change the business name to include a keyword. It is prohibited, it is the most reported violation in local search, and the suspension arrives in the month you can least afford it.

Be honest with yourself

When you do not need this

If the trucks are full for the season already, more demand produces quotes you decline and a reputation for not calling back. The useful work is pricing and scheduling.

If you are a two-truck operation whose work comes entirely from one property manager relationship, the website is a credibility check rather than a channel. Make it survive the check and protect the relationship.

And if your permit or authority is not current, stop. Everything above assumes you may lawfully advertise, and section 19237 says clearly that advertising is inside the conduct that requires authority.

10

Where these numbers come from

There are no statistics in this article. We could not read a primary source for what share of annual volume falls in the summer months, what a lead costs in this category, or how many quotes convert, and the figures in circulation come from industry associations and lead brokers describing their own data. Where this article gives a calendar, it is our operating judgment about how long the work takes to establish, and it is labeled as that rather than measured.

The advertising and permit language, including that advertising and soliciting sit inside the conduct requiring authority, and the requirement that the bureau publish authorized movers, are from California Business and Professions Code section 19237, read on 9 September 2026 at the state's own site.

Google's guidelines for representing your business supply the category and service area rules, and its prohibited and restricted content policy supplies what a merchant may and may not do when asking for reviews. Both read 2026-09-07.
