How to Monitor Your Brand Inside AI Answers

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overview have opinions about your business. Some are right. Some are wrong. Here's how to find out and respond.

Step 1: Run the brand-name query monthly.

Once a month, type your business name into ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overview, and Bing Copilot. Note what each one says.

You're looking for: factual accuracy, tone, what's missing, what's wrong, which sources they cite. Save the results in a spreadsheet, patterns emerge over months.

Step 2: Run your top buyer queries.

Type the queries your buyers are actually using to find you (or competitors). "Best Bay Area marketing agency for restaurants." "Affordable local SEO Bay Area." "Marketing agency that does ops too."

Note whether you're cited, whether you're missing, and which competitors are cited instead. This is your competitive intelligence.

Step 3: Check accuracy of cited claims.

AI engines hallucinate. They invent details. They mix up your business with someone else's.

Look at every claim in the AI answer about your business. Is your address right? Your founding year? Your service offering? Your pricing? When something is wrong, your priority is fixing the source the AI is reading, usually your own website, sometimes a directory listing, sometimes a competitor article that mentioned you incorrectly.

Step 4: Fix the upstream source.

AI engines pull from a finite set of trusted sources for any given fact. To correct an AI hallucination, find the source it's pulling from and fix that source.

Common upstream sources: your own website, your Wikipedia page (if you have one), Yelp, Google Business Profile, Crunchbase, LinkedIn. Update each of these to reflect ground truth. AI answers update within 2-6 weeks.

Step 5: Build the canonical entity description.

Every business should have one canonical paragraph that describes itself. Same wording on the website's About page, the LocalBusiness schema, the LinkedIn description, Google Business Profile description, Yelp About section.

When AI engines see the same description repeated across authoritative sources, they treat it as ground truth. Inconsistent descriptions across your own properties confuse AI engines and lead to hallucinations.
